TOPIC 10 · GRADE 4 ENRICHMENT
Fractions of Sets and Multiplication
Connect repeated fraction groups and fractions of whole-number collections.
Bridge to later fraction multiplicationBIG IDEA
A fraction of a set can be found by dividing into denominator-sized equal groups and taking the numerator of those groups. Repeated fractions connect to multiplication.
WHAT TO KNOW
- 3/4 of 20 means split 20 into 4 equal groups, then take 3 groups.
- 5 × 2/3 means five groups of two-thirds, totaling 10/3.
- Draw groups, bars, or arrays to keep the meaning visible.
WATCH OUT
The denominator tells how many equal groups to make, not how many objects to take directly.
TRY IT
Change the set size and fraction and watch equal groups form.
