TOPIC 5 · GRADES 3–4 FOUNDATION

Equivalent Fractions

Generate and explain different names for the same fraction.

MA.3.FR.2.2 · MA.4.FR.1.1–1.3

BIG IDEA

Multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number changes the number of pieces, not the total amount.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • 1/2, 2/4, and 4/8 cover the same amount of equal-sized wholes.
  • Equivalent fractions land at the same point on a number line.
  • Use models to explain why a rule works before relying on the rule.

WATCH OUT

Adding the same number to top and bottom usually does not make an equivalent fraction.

TRY IT

Change the scale factor and watch every original part split equally.
