TOPIC 4 · GRADES 3–4
Division Methods
Share equally, make groups, and use multiplication facts.
BIG IDEA
Division asks either how many are in each equal group or how many equal groups can be made. Multiplication checks the answer.
WHAT TO KNOW
- Draw equal groups or use repeated subtraction for small numbers.
- Use a related multiplication fact: if 6 × 4 = 24, then 24 ÷ 6 = 4.
- A remainder is an amount left after every full equal group is made.
WATCH OUT
The divisor and quotient have different jobs; read the story to decide group size versus number of groups.
TRY IT
Change the dividend and divisor to distribute counters into equal groups.
