BIG IDEA

Translations, rotations, and reflections preserve a figure's size and shape. Three-dimensional solids can be described and imagined from their two-dimensional faces.

WHAT TO KNOW

  • A translation slides, a rotation turns, and a reflection flips across a mirror line.
  • Rigid moves preserve side lengths and angle measures.
  • Faces are flat surfaces, edges join faces, and vertices are corner points on a solid.

WATCH OUT

A reflection is not the same as a rotation; reflected figures reverse orientation like mirror images.

Move the shape, then switch to solid view and compare a cube with a rectangular prism.
